Southland
In 2022 Southland began work on a community-driven vision for 2050. Through workshops, surveys and meetings, locals from throughout the region shared their thoughts on what makes Southland special and what needs to change.
Key issues included housing shortages, limited job opportunities and concerns about government regulation. People wanted more affordable housing, better public transport and healthcare. There was a strong push for sustainability, clean waterways and renewable energy, especially for Stewart Island.
The Call Me Southland report, published in 2023, shows that Southlanders are passionate about embracing progress while preserving their traditions. Communities dream of thriving towns with bustling main streets, vibrant events and spaces for youth and families to connect. They want a stronger, more diverse economy and a truly inclusive society that values Mana Whenua input.
Together, the people of Southland are working to create a connected, resilient and prosperous region for generations to come.
