Transport
Our two transport reports published in 2017 outline a long-term vision for transport across the Queenstown Lakes District. The research was a community-led effort involving over 220 residents who participated in public forums and volunteer task forces.
The studies found that rapid growth and reliance on private cars have led to major traffic congestion. The reports recommend creating a single local transport entity to coordinate planning. Key findings include the need for a “public transport first” mindset and better walking and cycling trails. The reports also suggest protecting future transport corridors and exploring new technologies to keep the region moving sustainably.
In 2021 we followed up on this work with forums about “mode shift” – how to relieve traffic congestion by getting people out of their cars and onto public and active transport.
