Conservation
This project began with a forum in Wānaka in May 2014, where over 60 people discussed conservation challenges in the Upper Clutha. Out of this came the Upper Clutha Conservation Task Force, to turn community concerns into action.
The task force gathered local knowledge, worked with councils and agencies and reviewed existing data to understand the state of the environment. It focused on biodiversity, air quality and water health. The report found that while the area remains special, growing pressure from development and land use is affecting natural systems. Better coordination, clear planning, regular monitoring and strong community involvement are essential to protect and improve the region’s environment.
The final report was completed in September 2015 following a second public forum.
